Empathy – Grace and Thought

At the beginning of this year when the our region first experienced freezing temperatures, a situation played out in front of me that reminded me of this Maya Angelou quote and really forced me to take a close look at myself and question my level of empathy.  It made me understand why Dr. Phil asks his guests that fail to understand how they come across, to go home and watch back the tape of the show so that they can see themselves and hopefully finally get it.

It was a cold morning and temperatures were set to start dipping even lower in less than an hour as I jumped on bus to my dentist before making my way to work.  As the driver stopped to pick up more people from this particular bus stop, we were all surprised at how they acted as they jumped on the bus!  They were all holding their noses, cursing and being loud and blatant.  When a lady who clearly looked homeless jumped on, it became evidently clear what the fuss was all about!

Daily Inspiration – I Lack Nothing – Grace and Thought

Grace and Thought2TODAY’S BIBLE VERSE:
The Lord is my Shepherd, I lack nothing.
(Psalm 23:1 NIV)

This is one of my favorite Bible verses.  It is such a simple and yet straightforward verse that always reminds me that as long as the Lord is leading my way, I will never want for anything!  When I think of God’s promises and grace, it makes me question why we ever lose sight of this all-important fact that as long as He is our guide we really lack for nothing. We had created a world where we had taken away the importance of the difference between wants and needs by conveniently getting whatever, whenever and turning ourselves into a gluttonous society that made us forget to count our blessings and see how much God always provides.   It made us start seeing the tangible like cars, houses, clothes, shoes etc. as our biggest need and made us forget all about the intangible like courage, empathy, love, peace, giving, forgiving, understanding etc. that we need so much more in order for us to fill fulfilled.

Daily Inspiration – Attitude – Grace and Thought

Attitude is everything

Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.

Live simply,

Love generously,

Care deeply,

Speak kindly……

Leave the rest to God.

Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass…

It’s about learning to dance in the rain.

Loving Self – Grace and Thought

I didn’t know that it was possible to love self!  It was the late 90’s when Oprah first introduced us to Iyanla Vanzant as the author of her then new book, ‘In the Meantime: Finding Yourself and the Love You Want‘.  I was living in London at the time.  I had been having one of those on-again, off-again non-commital relationships and I just couldn’t understand why I just couldn’t find someone that wanted to be with just me and make a commitment to me!  Everything within myself said, “You are not good enough, pretty enough or even worthy enough, that anybody would want to take such a step with you!”  I truly believed this about myself so I tried to change myself to what I thought other people wanted me to be because I thought that there was something seriously wrong with me. This caused me to be anything else but myself and I was miserable!  Its no wonder that I couldn’t find love.

Daily Inspiration – Faith – Grace and Thought

Grace and Thought2TODAY’S BIBLE VERSE:
The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith (that trust and confidence that spring from our belief in God).”
And the Lord answered, “If you had faith (trust and confidence in God) even [so small] like a grain of mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, be pulled up by the roots, and be planted in the sea, and it would obey you.”
(Luke 17:4-6 AMP)

Jesus’ answer to the apostles’ request just didn’t make sense to me until recently.  If all we need is to have a tiny little portion of faith; faith as small as a mustard seed, then how come I already had that but I couldn’t move anything in my life!  When I searched and found what a mustard seed looked like, I was blown away!  It is typically the smallest seed that you will ever find!

Daily Inspiration – Perseverance & Faith – Grace and Thought

Grace and Thought2TODAY’S GOSPEL:
(LUKE 18:1-8 AMP)
Also [Jesus] told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not to turn coward (faint, lose heart, and give up).
He said, “In a certain city there was a judge who neither reverenced and feared God nor respected or considered man.
And there was a widow in that city who kept coming to him and saying, “Protect and defend and give me justice against my adversary.”
And for a time he would not; but later he said to himself, “Though I have neither reverence or fear for God nor respect or consideration for man,
Yet because this widow continues to bother me, I will defend and protect and avenge her, lest she give me intolerable annoyance and wear me out by her continual coming or at the last she come and rail on me or assault me or strangle me.””
Then the Lord said, “Listen to what the unjust judge says!
And will not [our just] God defend and protect and avenge His elect (His chosen ones), who cry to Him day and night? Will He defer them and delay help on their behalf?”
I tell you, “He will defend and protect and avenge them speedily. However, when the Son of Man comes, will He find [persistence in] faith on the earth?”

I don’t know how many times in the past I would pray and pray consistently for something, but seeing no response to my prayers given up!  I used to have the attitude that either God does not hear my prayers or He has clearly said no.  Having built a better relationship with God, I now know that my attitude was about my timing not God’s timing!  I now believe that God doesn’t necessarily say no.  I believe He either says, “Not yet” or “I have something better for you.”

Daily Inspiration – Surrender – Grace and Thought

Grace and Thought2TODAY’S BIBLE VERSE:
Once more Jesus went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cup of suffering cannot be taken away unless I drink it, your will be done.”
(Matthew 26:42 GNT)

This is such a simple prayer yet it carries more weight than any other prayer that I can think of!  It is filled with humbleness, obedience and above all trust in God.  Jesus illustrates to us what it means to accept and completely surrender to God’s will.  He was experiencing fear and pain knowing what He was about to face that He was sweating blood (Luke 22:44 GNT).  After praying this prayer, He surrendered to God’s process and found peace.

God Is Our Refuge – Grace and Thought

God is our refuge and strength,
a help always near in times of great trouble.
That’s why we won’t be afraid when the world falls apart,

when the mountains crumble into the center of the sea,
when its waters roar and rage,

when the mountains shake because of its surging waves.  Selah

There is a river whose streams gladden God’s city,
the holiest dwelling of the Most High.
God is in that city. It will never crumble.
God will help it when morning dawns.
Nations roar; kingdoms crumble.
God utters his voice; the earth melts.
The Lord of heavenly forces is with us!
The God of Jacob is our place of safety.   Selah
